FACILITIES

JEFFERSON RESOURCE CENTER

Cattaraugus Community Action's headquarters are located at 25 Jefferson Street in Salamanca, New York. Known as the Jefferson Resource Center, the facility has become a hub for program delivery in the area, where families and individuals can access services from Community Action and other agencies. In addition to all of Community Action's programs, the facility is used by the Jefferson House Apartments, LP, and Fitness Plus.

Built in 1909, the Jefferson Resource Center was originally the Salamanca High School, and was a showpiece of its time, boasting skylights, broad staircases, and a state-of-the-art auditorium. The building was converted to use as an elementary school in the 1950's and by the late 1980's was no longer useful to the Salamanca School District. Since it was not handicapped accessible and was in serious need of repair, the building was sold for $1.00 to Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc., in 1987.

Since that time, CCA has added an elevator with CDBG Small Cities Block Grant funds, added energy conservation measures with New York State Energy Office funds, and converted an antiquated heating system with bank and IDA not-for-profit bond financing. A new handicapped entry area, a new roof, and a new security system were added between 1997 and 2000.

Eight units of transitional housing were constructed on the third floor for use by homeless adults and families, using funds from the Homeless Housing Assistance Program, the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal, and the Enterprise Foundation.

As the 100th anniversary of the opening of the facility nears, CCA will embark on a capital campaign in 2004 to raise funds to improve the facility, which will lead to a year-long celebration of the building in 2009.

ENERGY AND NUTRITION DISTRIBUTION CENTER

In 1999, a large warehouse was donated to Cattaraugus Community Action for the purpose of storing and distributing goods and products of our Energy and Nutrition Programs.  Located at 235 Main Street in Salamanca, the Distribution Center housed a variety of donated, gleaned, and purchased foods, insulation and other energy conservation supplies. The addition of this facility had allowed CCA to expand its food recovery and gleaning operations and its energy products inventory.  This facility, however, was destroyed by fire in April 2005.  All of our food and energy programs' inventory was completely destroyed, including a large truck used by our energy programs.  The community helped CCA tremendously with donations of cash, goods, and even temporary warehouse space to help us quickly recover from this devastating loss.  CCA is currently looking for a permanent warehouse site.
